About

Aesthetics: Humor. Joy. Exuberance. Deep-feeling massages that set off muscle memories, but in words and pictures and word-pictures. This includes seriousness, sadness, anger, and bereavement, among other emotions familiar to life. But the way you choose to evoke these emotions may be classified humorous, joyful, and/or exuberant. We want to know that you feel and feel deeply, which is different than a collection of words that were cleverly arranged to impersonate feeling. A sad event written humorously, or vice-versa, shows us that you, the artist, are making an effort to present a common experience differently, rather than drawing the same old conclusions about the same old emotions and experiences. We find ourselves increasingly bored by the cynicism, irony, despondence, and detachment characteristic of contemporary art. Somehow it seems that to build a better future–one in which there will be no need for bitter disillusionment because Earth will be a giant spinning toy store in which its children are healthy, encouraged, and free to imagine–we will have to triumph over cynicism and detachment with sincerity.
